Ramcharitmanas Gift Box - A Ramayana Painted in Gold

In 1796, Maharaja Udit Narayan Singh of Banaras set out to make something extraordinary. He invited artists from across North India to illustrate Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas, page by page, each one framed in gold. The work took eighteen years.

The manuscript came to be known as the Kanchana Chitra Ramayana, the Golden Illustrated Ramayana. In 2023, MAP brought its pages together in the exhibition Book of Gold, curated by the late Kavita Singh and Parul Singh.

This box brings that story home.
